Quick Pronunciation Lesson: Seasonal Words 🎃
With October here, let’s work on some common seasonal words to get into the spirit of fall. Focus on the vowel sounds and syllable stress for clear pronunciation:
- Pumpkin /ˈpʌmp.kɪn/ – Say it like "PUMP-kin," making sure the first syllable is emphasized.
- Halloween /ˌhæl.oʊˈwiːn/ – Notice the stress on the last syllable: "hal-oh-WEEN."
- Costume /ˈkɑː.stuːm/ – Make sure to stress the first syllable: "COS-tume."
- Candy /ˈkæn.di/ – Keep the 'a' in the first syllable short, like "CAN-dy."
Practice saying these words slowly at first, paying attention to the stressed syllables. Then try using them in sentences: “I’m carving a pumpkin for Halloween,” or “I’m wearing a scary costume this year.”
